Jemaa el-Fna Square is currently undergoing a large-scale renovation designed to make the space more comfortable for visitors while protecting its unique cultural heritage. The goal is to modernize the square without changing its authentic character. The project includes new paving made from natural stone, upgraded underground networks, and improved nighttime lighting to enhance the atmosphere in the evenings.
The renovation also aims to improve conditions for the performers who define the spirit of Jemaa el-Fna, musicians, storytellers, artists, and other traditional entertainers. Updated infrastructure and better organization of activity zones are intended to help maintain the square’s cultural identity.
Several practical upgrades are included as well, such as reorganizing the food stalls, renovating the sanitary facilities, and creating a dedicated area for horse-drawn carriages. Access control systems with retractable bollards will also be installed at key entry points to better manage traffic around the square.
Overall, the project aims to preserve the soul of Jemaa el-Fna while offering a more welcoming, comfortable, and vibrant environment for both locals and visitors from around the world.
